What can we do?
Much of what we watch, listen to, and learn about these days leaves us feeling overwhelmed. We might wonder, in the face of such epic issues and mounting tensions do we have a part to play? And my cynical side wonders if this might be the hope of those who masterfully bring to us the latest updates. The intent might not be to motivate but to entertain and pacify; to get us back time and time again to media coverage, the latest updates, and the most recent commentary.
But here is what I see in our life together and why I love what is happening at John Knox. I see people stepping forward to mentor children in our community. I see people preparing and serving meals each month to feed the hungry. I see people showing up to worship in person and on-line because we are drawn by the holiness and love of God. I see people reaching out to one another and holding each other in prayer and affection. I see people wanting to shelter and care for refugees in the Cleveland area, accompany the grieving, house the homeless, and visit the lonely.
I also see people realizing the sacredness of walking, singing, knitting, ringing, building, cooking, or praying together. Simple things that carry great love.
Please realize that this is a beautiful and beloved community. God is so present in and amongst us. Your work and witness and efforts to bring peace and show kindness are changing the world.
Susanne and I are honored and blessed to be your pastors.
Tom
