Spiritual Formation

Life without growth is stagnant and does not fully reflect the fullness of life found in God. At John Knox we take time regularly to see about our connection with God and how we can take next steps toward greater peace, fullness, and intimacy through following Jesus. We are not perfect and we do not expect you to be. The spiritual life includes our brokenness, not running from it. Join us, instead, in running to God.

Some of our groups take a hiatus in the summer months. Make sure to check the calendar to see when meetings are occurring.

LifeGroups

You weren’t created to do life alone and at John Knox we are about ‘Building Authentic Community.’ One way this is happening at JKPC is by encouraging as many people as possible to join a LifeGroup. Being part of a LifeGroup means having people you can talk to, depend on, and explore God’s Word in community. A LifeGroup is made up of 10-15 people who get together monthly to explore faith and share life together.

LifeGroups meet once a month to share life, study the Bible around a theme, and pray for each other. Different groups meet on different days of the week – there are evening groups, daytime groups, and weekend groups. LifeGroups usually run from September through June, and then next September we will form new LifeGroups (if you want). Best of all, anyone can participate: members, friends, you could even invite a friend! All are welcome.

Each month there will be a new LifeGroup Study Guide posted on our website. All groups will study the same theme, so we will be having a common conversation as a church about topics including: Hospitality, Generosity, Gratitude, Incarnation, and much more.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study

Interested in exploring the writings of the Old and New Testament and getting behind the text to better understand why and to whom it was written? Or just as important, perhaps you are keen to explore what these ancient texts might mean for our own discipleship and personal growth today. If so, then come and join in the conversation as we take on and ‘dig into’ Scripture. One of our pastoral associates, Lou Will, gets things started, but it is the Scripture texts and the perspectives of those attending that really enlighten everyone’s understanding. There is always room for more; join us when you can.

Mens’ Tuesday Morning Breakfast and Study

Are there times when you get tired of going through life alone and you need others to encourage and cheer you on? Come early on Tuesday to join a small group of men willing to meet over donuts and/or breakfast to discuss not only the Bible, but share stories, build friendships, and be encouraged.  Often led by Tom, one of our pastors, this group centers on a passage of Scripture and includes conversation about what it could mean and how it relates to life. The hope is that what might have been confusing at first becomes accessible and inspiring, giving us a chance to grow in faith, build new habits, and see our lives so full of God given possibility.

Be The Bridge & Matthew 25

Matthew 25:31–46 calls all of us to actively engage in the world around us, so our faith comes alive and we wake up to new possibilities. As a Matthew 25 church we are to act boldly and compassionately to dismantle structural racism, eradicate poverty and build congregational vitality.  We are to be a church of action where God’s love, justice and mercy shine forth and are contagious.

Be the Bridge Committee functions as a connector or bridge from John Knox to the greater community.  We are charged with the responsibility of providing informative programming about community concerns and social justice issues as well as identifying resources and avenues for others to get involved.  Programming can be a book discussion or a zoom/in-person program featuring a guest speaker from the congregation or community.  We often collaborate with other church committees and, occasionally, we partner with other communities of faith.

Yoga

Feeling stressed, uptight, and a little negative? The spiritual life is not only about the spirit, it includes all of who we are, including our bodies. Our resident certified yoga instructor, Jennifer, leads an easy flow night of yoga on Wednesdays for those of all abilities. Her approach to the night is less about yoga instruction and more about remembering who we are as loved by God - even though it is still yoga! I think you’ll find it near impossible to leave with the same stress and tightness you felt when you arrive that night. Let the soft music, gentle moves, candlelight, and Jennifer’s contagious spirit of genuine Christian positivity transform you.

Discipleship Curriculum

A small group of people gather weekly, using the Disciple Bible Study Curriculum, to dig deep into the Bible. These run for the year and cover a variety of topics. Disciple classes are both informational and transformational and include daily study with weekly group discussion. As each study is self-contained, it is not necessary to have attended any of the Disciple studies to participate in the current Disciple Curriculum class.
